PRRD signs law making mobile numbers ‘portable’

  • PRRD signs law making mobile numbers ‘portable’

By Azer Parrocha February 19, 2019, 5:35 pm

MANILA -- President Rodrigo R. Duterte has signed a law that will allow mobile users to keep their numbers even after they change service providers or subscription plans.

Duterte signed the Mobile Number Portability Act (Republic Act. 11202) on Feb. 8 but was released to media on Tuesday (Feb. 19).

Under the law, all qualified subscribers should be provided with Mobile Number Portability (MNP) completely free of charge and information on MNPs including its features.

“The basic premise behind a nationwide Mobile Number Portability system is to promote consumer welfare as it fosters the freedom to choose and to respond to quality, price, and other relevant considerations without the consumers having to change their mobile numbers whenever they change mobile service providers or subscription plans,” the law read.

It is also meant to encourage mobile service providers to compete with each other to provide consumers with the best overall value that they can offer.

This way, it would encourage technological innovation that will stimulate even greater demand for telecommunications products and services and lead to a virtuous cycle of economic growth.

  • When I worked for a UK telco account, I became accustomed to hearing SIM swap, port in and port out. This was back in 2014.

Yung LTE upgrade while keeping the same number, matagal na ba yun? Lately ko lang kasi nalaman.
  • I think those promos will stay, pero we can expect na mago-offer na ng mga promos ang telcos with calls to ALL networks with long validity.

Speaking of which, nagreact na ang TNT at nago-offer na sila ngayon ng Unlicall to ALL networks na may validity of 30 days.

    Surfsaya allnet 319
    Unlicall/text to ALL networks
    2GB data
    200mb/FB per day
    Valid for 30 days

Dapat lahat ng call/text to all networks na. Anyway, habang tumatagal naman mas dumadami na gumagamit ng internet based calls and messaging kaya nababawasan na din consumption ng simpleng calls/text.
  • In an interview, DICT Acting Secretary Eliseo Rio Jr. said telcos requested for six months to conform with Republic Act 11202 or the Mobile Number Portability Act.

“They were asking for six months, which is quite reasonable. The first transfer will be six months from now. Around January 2020,” Rio said.

“Of course it’s reasonable because you will not be able to transfer a mobile number to another provider if their platform it is not ready,” he added.

  • Delay ulit??

For the Philippine market, Syniverse estimates the period of integration and interoperability to be no later than 18 months from setting up of the support mechanism. In addition, porting services shall be free of charge to the customers.

  • Nandito na ang MNP

Globe sad that customers who are not under a subscription lock-in period, have no financial obligations or overdue balances may avail of the service.

To apply for porting, mobile customers can visit the nearest Globe store or log in to their GlobeOne account.

Meanwhile, Globe myBusiness customers may check if their number is eligible for MNP via the GlobeOne app.
